Palm Beach County Youth Waterway Cleanup Program

Palm Beach County Youth Waterway Cleanup Program

Protecting South Florida’s Waterways While Educating the Next Generation

Project Mission

Educating Youth

Marine Fisheries Alliance is bringing students, schools, families, and community partners together through our Palm Beach County Youth Waterway Cleanup Program — a hands-on environmental education and community service initiative dedicated to removing trash and marine debris from South Florida’s waterways while inspiring young people to become lifelong stewards of our marine environment.

Objectives.

Our program gives youth volunteers the opportunity to move beyond the classroom and participate directly in conservation. Students help remove plastics, discarded fishing line, bottles, cans, and other debris from shorelines and accessible areas surrounding local waterways while learning how pollution affects fish, marine wildlife, coastal habitats, and the communities that depend upon healthy water.

Participating students may also receive verified community service hours for eligible volunteer activities, making the program an opportunity to serve their community while gaining meaningful environmental experience.

Partnering With Palm Beach County Schools
Marine Fisheries Alliance is developing partnerships with schools throughout Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, and greater Palm Beach County to provide organized youth conservation and volunteer opportunities.

Our first school partnership began with Saint Jude Catholic School in Boca Raton, connecting students interested in community service with opportunities to participate in local environmental conservation.

Our goal is to expand this model to additional public, private, charter, and faith-based schools throughout Palm Beach County.

By establishing ongoing relationships with local schools rather than conducting only isolated cleanup events, Marine Fisheries Alliance hopes to create a sustainable network of young environmental stewards who can participate in conservation throughout their school years.

More Than Picking Up Trash
A Marine Fisheries Alliance cleanup is designed to combine environmental education with direct action.

Students learn how litter originating miles from the ocean can travel through streets, storm drains, canals, and the Intracoastal Waterway before ultimately reaching coastal and marine environments.

Participants also learn about the effects of plastics, monofilament fishing line, abandoned fishing gear, and other marine debris on fish, birds, sea turtles, marine mammals, mangroves, seagrass, reefs, and other important South Florida habitats.

Students then become part of the solution by physically removing debris from the environment.

This combination of education, volunteerism, and hands-on conservation allows young people to see the immediate impact of their work.

Creating Measurable Environmental Impact
As the program expands, Marine Fisheries Alliance intends to document the results of our cleanup efforts so that our impact can be measured over time.

Program metrics may include:
   ●    Number of youth volunteers participating
   ●    Student volunteer and community service hours completed
   ●    Number of cleanup events conducted
   ●    Pounds of trash and marine debris removed
   ●    Types of debris collected
   ●    Waterways and shoreline areas served
   ●    Schools and community organizations participating
   ●    Repeat student participation
   ●    Educational and conservation activities completed

Tracking these outcomes will allow Marine Fisheries Alliance to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, identify areas where marine debris is particularly problematic, and provide our donors, sponsors, community partners, and grant-making organizations with measurable evidence of their impact.

Why Palm Beach County’s Waterways Need Our Help
Palm Beach County’s canals, lakes, Intracoastal Waterway, estuaries, beaches, and coastal waters are interconnected.

Trash entering one portion of this system can eventually become marine debris affecting habitats and wildlife far from where that trash originated.

Discarded plastics, fishing line, nets, bottles, bags, and other debris can entangle wildlife, be consumed by marine animals, damage sensitive habitats, and diminish the health and beauty of the waterways that make South Florida such a special place to live.
Protecting these waters requires more than removing existing debris. Long-term change requires teaching future generations why these resources matter and how their individual actions can protect them.

That is where youth education becomes one of the most important components of our mission.

Building South Florida’s Next Generation of Conservation Leaders
A student who spends a morning removing fishing line from a shoreline or plastics from a mangrove ecosystem gains a perspective that can be difficult to replicate inside a classroom.

Our goal is not simply to create volunteers for a day.
We want students to understand that they can personally make a difference in the health of Florida’s environment.

Through participation, students gain experience in:
   ●    Environmental stewardship
   ●    Marine conservation
   ●    Community service
   ●    Responsible waste disposal
   ●    Marine debris awareness
   ●    Teamwork and leadership
   ●    Protecting fish and wildlife
   ●    Understanding human impacts on aquatic ecosystems

These experiences can help create young conservation leaders who bring those lessons back to their schools, families, and communities.

Expanding the Program Throughout Palm Beach County
Marine Fisheries Alliance’s long-term goal is to establish recurring youth waterway cleanup opportunities throughout Palm Beach County.

Beginning with our partnership with Saint Jude Catholic School in Boca Raton, we plan to develop relationships with additional schools and youth organizations throughout Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, and surrounding Palm Beach County communities.
As participation grows, additional funding will allow us to conduct more cleanup events, reach more waterways, provide more educational resources, and give more students access to meaningful conservation experiences.

How Grant Funding Supports the Program
Marine Fisheries Alliance is seeking partnerships with foundations, corporations, government agencies, environmental organizations, and charitable grant-making organizations that share our commitment to youth education and the protection of Florida’s aquatic resources.

Funding can help support program needs such as:
   ●    Cleanup and safety equipment
   ●    Gloves, grabbers, buckets, and collection supplies
   ●    Student educational materials
   ●    Marine debris identification and data collection materials
   ●    Transportation and logistical expenses
   ●    Disposal and recycling expenses
   ●    Outreach to participating schools
   ●    Conservation signage and educational displays
   ●    Expansion into additional Palm Beach County communities
   ●    Equipment necessary to access and clean difficult shoreline and waterway locations

Every investment in this program creates two forms of impact: marine debris is physically removed from South Florida’s environment, and young people receive an educational experience designed to influence how they treat that environment for years to come.

A Scalable Community Conservation Program

Our vision is to build a program that can grow alongside community support.

A single cleanup can introduce a group of students to conservation.

A recurring school partnership can engage students year after year.

A network of participating Palm Beach County schools can ultimately create hundreds of young environmental stewards working together to protect the waterways they call home.
With support from donors, sponsors, and grant partners, Marine Fisheries Alliance can expand the frequency and geographic reach of these events while documenting measurable environmental and educational outcomes.

Schools & Youth Organizations — Get Involved
Marine Fisheries Alliance welcomes partnerships with schools, teachers, student organizations, youth groups, service clubs, and community organizations seeking meaningful environmental volunteer opportunities in Palm Beach County.

Programs can provide students with hands-on conservation experience while creating opportunities to fulfill eligible community service requirements.

If your school or organization would like to participate in an upcoming Palm Beach County youth waterway cleanup, we would love to hear from you.

Funders & Corporate Partners — Help Us Expand the Impact
Marine Fisheries Alliance invites foundations, businesses, charitable organizations, and community partners to help us expand this program.

Your support can directly increase the number of students we reach, the number of cleanup events we conduct, and the amount of marine debris removed from Palm Beach County waterways.

Together, we can protect South Florida’s waterways today while educating the generation that will be responsible for protecting them tomorrow.
